Shopify Speed Optimization: A Practical Guide for Store Owners

    Back to Blog

A 1-second delay in load time can drop conversions by 7%. Here's a non-technical, prioritized playbook to make your Shopify store faster without rebuilding it.

    1. Audit Your Apps

Every installed app injects scripts into your store — even apps you no longer use. Open your app list and uninstall anything you haven't touched in 60 days. This alone often shaves 1–2 seconds off load time.

    2. Compress Every Image

Images are usually 60–70% of page weight. Use WebP format, keep hero images under 200KB, and product images under 100KB. Shopify auto-serves WebP if you upload high-quality originals.

    3. Lazy-Load Below-the-Fold Content

Anything not visible on first paint should load only when the user scrolls to it. Most modern Shopify themes support this — just enable it in theme settings.

    4. Pick a Lightweight Theme

Heavy "feature-rich" themes can score below 30 on PageSpeed. Themes like Dawn, Sense, or Impulse are built for performance. If you're on a slow legacy theme, replatforming the front end is often the cheapest speed win.

    5. Cut Third-Party Scripts

Each chat widget, popup, review tool, and pixel adds latency. Keep one analytics tool, one marketing pixel per channel, and one review app. Question every other script.

    6. Preload Fonts

Custom web fonts can block rendering. Use system fonts where possible, or preload the 1–2 fonts you actually use to prevent layout shift.

    7. Test on Real Devices

Don't trust desktop PageSpeed scores. Test on a mid-range Android over 4G — that's what most of your buyers experience.
